Hello My name is Austin Browar and i am an FNG. I am looking froward to being part of your guys unit. I just got a new pair of P-3 glasses, and i am wondering if you could be denied being a paratrooper if you had glasses? So was 20/20 Vision mandatory for airborne qualification?

Hey Austin, There is photo evidence of a paratrooper in Normandy wearing eyeglasses. It is the only one I know of but it goes to show that it was done. However I'm not sure if the troopers that wore glasses jumped with them on. There would be a tendency to loose them on the jump. As a member of the unit that needs glasses or corrective lenses, I will suggest contacts for the event and switching to glasses after the action is over. I do find that wearing a helmet with glasses tends to be a pain. Especially while running. It is up to you. Just as long as the glasses are period.

I’d agree with Al. Unsure if they jumped with them on. I found a photo of a trooper in the marshaling area prior to D-Day wearing a set. Also a few photos of them being worn in the field. Both by paratroopers and also by glider riders. It is correct to wear them, but it’s one more thing that can fall off and get broken when in the field.
I’d also recommend contacts, but that’s up to you. I’d hate to see a set of eye wear fall off and get stepped on or broken some how.
Let me know if I can help with any questions or anything else.
Trevor

I wear contacts in the field and wouldn't do it any other way but that's me
Ferny wears glasses in the field all the time and it never seemed to be an issue with him
The fellas are right... there is photo evidence so if you have period correct eyewear I'd say do what works for you

Just as a safety thought...glasses provide some protection against all the powder and crap when shooting. I’ve had crap get into my contacts in the field, necessitating removal and replacement, which brings up clean hands etc when touching your eyes.

You can definitely jump wearing glasses. But you need a strap or a piece of 1/4 inch cotton webbing to keep them on your head. That is what people do today and they probably did the same in WWII.

I don't know if i would jump with glasses as they could get ripped off. As for combat, i never had a problem. I recommend the period temple frames (wraps around the ears) as they hold their place pretty well. Contacts are a great option, unless you have eyes like mine. My Doc told me I would be a fool to wear contacts because of my special vision constraints (i.e. lazy eye, will discuss later, if necessary) Hope this helps, Bleed
